The Department of the Italian Language

The Department of the Italian Language is the youngest language department of the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​and Area Studies. It was established on the 23 of June 1997 by V.A. Sadovnichiy, Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, Rector of Moscow State University. This department became the first department of the Italian language in MSU.

The staff of the department is cheerful, young and dynamic, who provide a truly university level of training and a collegiate attitude to the students. Italian native speakers, graduates of universities of Bologna and Florence, traditionally work at the department.

The principal goal of the department is to provide students with a broad practical and fundamental knowledge and serious training in the field of the modern Italian language and culture. In addition to traditional courses, which insure the high level of the language acquisition (the levels C1-C2 according to the European grading system),the department introduces innovative courses which are efficient for the future professional skills of a graduate:

  • "Italian for specific purposes: business and finance"
  • "Italian for specific purposes: record keeping and business correspondence in state institutions of the Italian Republic"
  • "Italian for specific purposes: law and legal proceedings"
  • "Italian for specific purposes: publishing and media", "Linguistic background knowledge for interpreters: conferences and business negotiations"
  • "Modern methods of language teaching - Italian in High School", "Italian in fashion industry"
Our graduates work as the heads and project managers, translators and lecturers in different fields:

  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation
  • Academy of Foreign Trade of the Russian Federation
  • Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Federation
  • Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation
  • Diplomatic Mission of the Russian Federation in Italy
  • Embassy of the Italian Republic in the Russian Federation
  • Fuel and Energy Concerns - "Gazprom", "Lukoil", "Severstal" , "ENI"
  • The joint Italian-Russian enterprises and companies in the field of high fashion and the fashion industry , design, furniture production , elite tourism, real estate, hotel and restaurant, car and sport industries
  • In the main universities of Russia.
International Partnership and Mobility Scheme

The contracts were signed according to the European concept of academic mobility with:
  • the University of Bologna (in particular with the High School of Modern Languages ​​for Translators)
  • the University of Rome «La Sapienza» (the agreement on student exchange)
  • the University of Florence (the Faculty of Philology)

All the agreements provide the students, who study Italian as the first language, as well as the second language, with a possibility to take part in a semester exchange programme in Italy. In accordance with the inter-university agreements with the abovementioned Italian universities, training classes for Russian students are free of charge.

Since 2005, we have been cooperating with the summer school of the Italian language «Lingua», which is situated on Tuscany coast. The students of our faculty, who study Italian as their third language, got the possibility to have classes combining them with pleasant seaside vacation.
