The Department of French Cultures (till December 2009 – Department of French Language for Science Faculties) has more than half-century history: it was founded in 1947 and was teaching courses at the science faculties of the Moscow State University. Due to the increase of the requirement in specialists in area studies and in culture, who has deep knowledge in the field of the French language and cultures of French-speaking countries, teaching the French language and culture at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies – the program in Area Studies and International Relations (area Western Europe: France) and the program in Cultural Studies – has become a priority guideline in the work of the department. Besides, the department provides courses in separate groups of science faculties.

• Teaching courses of the French language and culture in the program in Area Studies of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies (area Western Europe: France) and in the program in Cultural Studies.
• Conducting courses and specialty courses in the program in Area Studies of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies (area Western Europe: France).
• Supervising course papers, diploma papers and dissertations.
• International cooperation with the University of Franche-Comté (France).
• International cooperation with language centres of France (Perpignan, Brest, Touraine, Corsica).
• Cooperation with the Russian Institute of Cultural Studies.
• Teaching the French language in separate groups of science faculties of the Moscow State University.
• Organizing extracurricular activities with students and postgraduate students.
• Organizing probations to regions of France.

The French language at our department is not only classwork. It is objective scientific and educational probations, meetings with colleagues from France and Belgium, round tables and seminars, as well as francophone thematic meetings that have already become traditional.
